Sale! Simply Alpaca Aran

$6.50 - $12.99 100g / Hank  Original Price: $12.99

You’d have to be an alpaca to get a more natural fiber, this is all of the compelling, next-to-skin softness of alpaca for the sustainably minded. The natural warmth of alpaca fiber combine with the heavier weight to create a wonderful yarn for luxuriously cozy garments and accessories that knit up in a trice. No dyes or bleach are used to process the yarn; a full spectrum of natural shades are created by meticulously sorting the fiber. As colors are naturally occurring, some variation from skein to skein is normal. Retail: $12.99

Just a warning to those who are planning to make sweaters from this - or any other 100% alpaca yarn. Yes, it's incredibly soft. And very warm. However, unlike wool, it will stretch out. Better to get an alpaca/wool blend for things like sweaters. Pure alpaca works better - in the long run - in things like hats, mittens, winter scarves and shawls.

I really like this yarn- soft and lofty with a bit of halo, but like others have stated, it is definitely not Aran weight - more like a DK. The label on the yarn says 4-4.75 sts per inch on size 10-11 needles. I’d say that if you use 10-11 needles you will wind up with a lace fabric.

Not sure what everyone's expectations are for Aran weight, so I actually looked it up and found Weight Needles Gauge in SS(4") Medium(worsted/aran) 7–9 16 - 20sts I swatched using an 8 and got 18 sts. I had to go down to a size 6 to actually get 20 sts. The fabric was fine - not too flimsy. The alpaca is light so you actually get more yardage per 100g than something like City Tweed Aran. I plan on using this for a worsted/aran pattern without worries. It's beautiful. I just ordered more.

Knitpicks needs to get their information correct on this yarn. The yarn itself is nice but it's NOT Aran weight and it has nothing to do with being a "gauge complainer". The website shows needles 7-9 HOWEVER the label shows needles 10-11. This is a light 2 ply yarn and much closer to a DK as others suggest. This definitely a "mis-labeled" product.

You know what, gauge complainers, make a swatch and adjust. This yarn is awesome, it makes a dreamy soft fabric for a totally reasonable price. I made my daughter a cardigan, and I’m going to get more of this for myself when it’s back in stock. Love. Love. Love.
