Sock Lab Hawthorne

$15.99 100g / Hank

Our ingenious color scientists having been experimenting to bring you Limited Edition Hawthorne colors!

Full disclosure: we had to dust of our math hats for this experiment. Our goal was to produce several self-striping yarns, with 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 being the ratios for the contrasting stripes. We managed to achieve these stripy and electric colorways by hand painting bold hues onto 5 meter hanks, as opposed to the standard 3 meter length. The result? Longer color repeats!

Please note: Hawthorne is a hand painted yarn and colors may vary from skein to skein.

I ordered two hanks of the black and white stripes and I love them. I'm going to make some wicked witch socks with red toes and heels for my sister and I. I wish Knit Picks would make the stripes permanent selections. I want all three.

I ordered four of these limited edition sock yarn 'specimens' in October 2018. I got the pink, orange, purple, and white ones. There are hardly any speckles in mine. The white has gray areas. The speckles are not a true black - on the white yarn, they look gray. On the purple and pink yarns, they look blue. Only on the orange yarn do the speckles look back. This was not what I expected the yarn to look like. I am disappointed.

I received the subscription sock labs box this month. The Halloween sock lab colorways are underwhelming. I LOVE the Hawthorne base, but solid color and black speckle just isn't my cup of tea. I ended up dip-dying the orange speciman with red dye and the green one with blue to make the yarn more interesting and now I'm happier.

It’s beautiful. Almost all wool is very itchy to me, including Peruvian wool, but this is next to skin soft. I ordered Sock Labs #2 and you can see all the shades of grey, cream, pink and violet in real life. It’s everything I expected it to be plus some! And it knits up with nice even stitches and no splitting. A dream to use. KP, you’ve done it again. Can hardly wait for the next offering. :-)

I am really pleased with this yarn. I’m on the first of a pair of socks and this yarn is very well-behaved: no splitting or slipping off the DPN’s and great stitch definition. I’ve never used the Hawthorne before but it seems very sturdy which not all 4ply or fingering yarn does for socks. I’ve been knitting lots of socks lately with lots of different sock yarns, so I consider myself to have some experience! It’s a bit on the dear side but the colour changes are really lovely on the #2. I’m so delighted, I might keep the socks for myself instead of gifting them
