I tried about 8 times to make a seed stitch tie. The yarn split, stretched and had an inconsistent texture. Beautiful color though-ivy. I will try a heavier weight. Glad to know it wasn’t just me.
Savannah04-18-2018 10:43am
I bought several colours to make a shawl with and they all seem to be different thicknesses, very noticeably so for one in particular.
Debbie miller03-26-2018 8:06pm
What wonderful yarn ! I am in the process of making a ruffled pillow . It is a soft beautifully colored yarn , I love all of the myriad of colors. One for every color you would want . It does not split if you are a consistent knitter and looks so pretty blocked:
Connie D03-13-2018 2:08pm
I absolutely love knitting with this yarn. I knit a small amount and washed/dried the test piece so I can see the results. Turned out softer and the piece barely felted, which was a big surprise. I highly recommend this yarn.
Kathleen02-21-2018 10:11pm
Lovely colors, but very disappointed with quality.. Splitting, thick and thin yarn, and the fuzzing is horrible. My project looks likes it's years old and I haven't even finished it. Wanted to love this yarn, but I cannot.
Melissa Jurisch02-01-2018 8:24pm
Made a pair of socks for my daughter, made them a little large to accommodate some shrinking. After she washed them the won’t even start to go over her foot. Shrinkage was close to 40%.
Kristin Connor01-15-2018 4:48pm
Warning. Use caution if using this to do any colorwork with white in it. The colors in a sweater I just finished bled into the white and no amount of trying to get the dye out of the white yarn works. The sweater is ruined without having worn it once. I have used knitpicks yarns for years and this is a recent development with their yarn. A different project with different colors from this line did the same.
Susanne12-27-2017 9:41pm
Just commenting that some colors are not colorfast. Fuschia, for one.
Alli12-26-2017 10:10am
I love this yarn! Beautiful colors! It is a little itchy but it's not horrible once knitted up.
Renee10-23-2017 12:05pm
I'm pretty much a yarn snob, and I love Pallete. I've made multiple pairs of beautiful colorwork mittens. It knits great. I find the yarn is stiff enough to get good stitch definition but my mittens come out very soft. I haven't found an issue with splitting or multiple ends. If I did I would just wet splice them back together anyway. I'm making a very large colorwork color with new and leftover fingering weight yarn. I'll use three of my fav brands, and this is definitely one of them. Jamieson and Miss Babs 2-ply are the other two.
Lisa H10-08-2017 8:05pm
I love the color range of these yarns. It's not the softest to work with but it's far from the scratchiest I've used either. I'm sure after a soak it will be just fine. It can be a little splitty. I have not had the issues with multiple ends and breakages that others have complained in. I wish that Knit Picks would arrange the colors from the same family next to each other so it would be easier to choose.
Ann Reynolds09-29-2017 9:43pm
I am a fervent knitter and love this yarn. I purchased the full range and am assembling the crochet afghan. Easy to use either crocheting or knitting. Lots left over for sweaters, scarves and shawls. Having a great time putting projects together.
Amy09-26-2017 9:34pm
I love making socks. And even though this is not considered a sock yarn it works really well. I like the fact that it comes in so many colors that I can match all my clothes. It wears really well and I get so many compliments on the socks I make using this yarn.
Opal09-22-2017 3:59pm
I love the variety in colors but its itchy and splitty
Maggie S.07-09-2017 7:57pm
I have multiple sweaters made from this yarn. The colors are beautiful, and it's not at all an itchy wool. The weight is good in that it's not too heavy or bulky. I particularly appreciate the crispness and saturation of the shades.
Anke07-02-2017 1:31pm
My review is only for one specific Palette color, Hyacinth. The color knit picks shows on their page. is a bright pink-ish purple, (I checked on 4 different monitors to get an accurate idea that it would fit well with the other colors I was using with it).
The actual yarn color is a dull blue-purple with a grey tone. Since it was used as a light gradient with Mulberry, Huckleberry Heather and next to Lantana, the different hue to all those is rather jarring and unpleasant.
It would be a great help, if Knit Picks organized their palette yarns in such a way, that similar colors and hues are displayed next to each other, to make shopping easier. Knit Picks could do much better there and my hope is, that in the future they will.
As far as the quality of the Palette yarn in general is concerned, I like it a lot. But as stated, the review was about a specific color only. I have ordered Ice Lily to be a lighter gradient to the Hyacinth I received, to salvage something of the project, we'll just have to see if that works...
Amanda K.06-15-2017 5:34pm
I adore this yarn! I had never used it before and ordered a sweater'd quantity of it and just LOVE the way it feels, knits up, it's perfect! I can't say enough about it, and will be buying a lot more.
Mary Margaret Kachurowski05-18-2017 7:29am
I used the Palette wool for a Heidi Bears Hippo and it crocheted up soft and strong!!! I'm back for more to make a Heidi Bears Smaug. Lovely wool!
Wanda04-26-2017 1:14pm
While I do find this yarn slightly itchy for direct skin contact (I tend to be sensitive to most wool in that way), I enjoy the wide variety of colors, I haven't encountered any problems with splits in several balls that I have used. For a couple quick easy sweaters that I wear over a tshirt, this is a lovely inexpensive yarn, and I get compliments on my projects with this. :)
AG03-14-2017 6:40am
I enjoyed working with this yarn when making a giant shawl. I find it soft and not itchy against my skin. HOWEVER, I used pimento and cream together and the red bled on my cream. I was pretty heart broken. With careful resoaking of the white part, most of the bleed was saved but if you look closely the white is a bit pink in parts (sadly not uniform but splotchy). I'm VERY disappointed that a yarn sold for colour work would do this. So be careful when mixing the bright reds with whites.
TM03-04-2017 11:28pm
This yarn is terrible. Very cheap feeling with an unpleasant texture, splits far too easily. A huge disappointment. The only positive thing I could say is that the colours are nice enough, but that's irrelevant when yarn quality is so poor. I regret wasting my money on it, and as a result, I am hesitant to ever purchase anything from Knit PIcks again. Very unfortunate that so many reviews are misleading and claim this is a good quality yarn.
Emma02-10-2017 10:45am
This is my favorite knitpicks yarn along with Curio. I particularly love the heathers. If you want to see something special, felt this yarn. I have felted hats and capes and they came out gorgeous. I have tried many different types of knitpicks yarn through the years and I think you just need to find the right yarn for the right project. It's hit and miss to be sure but when I find the right combination, I go nuts! I crochet so my experience is going to be different than that of a knitter.
Cynthia V.02-03-2017 10:38pm
I'm on a tight budget due to some ongoing medical issues but this luscious, colorful yarn allows me to continue to do something such as knitting which feeds my soul.
Blessings
Cynthia
Lynne Wagner01-29-2017 9:46am
I just made a curtain for my from door. One could not ask for a nicer yarn to use.
Sam01-20-2017 10:33pm
After reading the reviews I didn't anticipate the yarn being soft, but I'm so pleased with how touchable it is! Am currently even using it for a woven baby blanket. And the color options are AMAZING. Affordable, great feel, great color choices. Very happy!
Nina G01-19-2017 6:40pm
Outstanding yarn for color work. LOVE the heathers. Would appreciate more tonal "stretch" of each main color for blending. Heathers achieve this well. You have a wonderful tonal stretch in blues, browns and greens. More heathers needed in yellow-red, blue-gray and purples. Need icy blue, gunmetal grey, orange heather and a smoother transition through the reds. Thank you in advance!
Christine Lough01-01-2017 6:00am
I have purchased Palette many times in the past. It has always been excellent quality. However, my last purchase was partially disappointing. I purchased Almond, Grass, Pimento, Blue and natural on 12.22.2016. The 4 colors were fine, but the natural undyed skein was inferior quality. It was spun very, very loosely, split badly, had no elasticity and knit up into an irregular messy looking stockinette. The 4 colors had none of these problems and knit up into a tidy looking fabric with good stitch definition. The undyed skein is unusable.
bonnie stull12-06-2016 6:03am
I have used this yarn on several occasions, and I have never had a problem with it. It has very nive texture and easy to crochet with.
Janet Panecki11-30-2016 10:05pm
Most of my knitting is done for vintage dolls and this is my yarn of choice. Except for the smallest of dolls, Palette works up perfectly scaled - I love the array of colors and the smooth texture i get with ST stitch.
Arme11-23-2016 1:27am
I had my doubts when it first arrived because the balled yarn felt slightly scratchy - not the worst I've felt, but I wouldn't want it touching my skin. After knitting it up, though, it felt much better, and better still after blocking. A very nice yarn for the price.
Anna Drago11-15-2016 5:52am
Perfect yarn! I made two fair isle sweaters for my toddler son from this yarn so far - love it! No pilling, no splitting, holds its shape. Warning: I learned the hard way - don't ever throw it in the washing machine though. It's hand wash only.
Irina11-06-2016 12:24pm
First I ordered Sky color, and was so disappointed, because the color was absolutely different from the picture on the website. That was dark blue-green, not light, almost baby blue like pictured on the website. I exchanged it for Clarity color, and very happy with it, I would say, I felt in love with it. So light pastel blue color, exactly what I was looking for. I will knit a ribbed pattern sweater. I think 15 balls will be enough for me(medium regular size). This yarn is soft, good quality, not thick, and it's a pleasure to knit with it. And such a good price for pure wool! I will definitely order more later in different colors. Because I love to knit. Thank you!
P.S. Exchange-return process was smooth and easy.
Amy10-24-2016 5:05pm
Love love love this yarn! Easy to work with and great for color work. Lots of color choices! It is exactly what I needed!!
Alli10-01-2016 10:04pm
I purchased two skeins of the Hyacinth for a shawl for my mother's Christmas gift. Love the color and feel of the yarn. I've since ordered one in Custard and two in Spruce. :)
EllieG10-01-2016 12:21am
The color selection is awesome but I wish you had a similar collection in a softer merino type wool. Stroll is nice and soft but needs more colours (especially an off white or cream) This is definitely not next to skin soft. It did knit up well but scratchy. Not sure I would use it again
Lucy Osborne09-11-2016 1:19pm
Not since Rowan stopped making their lightweight DK has a lightweight wool been available that's suitable for my colour knitting. At the price, Palette makes a lot more sense financially than Rowan's yarns, and the colours are excellent for subtle colourways and gradient/ombre work. Well done Knitpicks!
Jill08-28-2016 3:47am
This is my go to yarn when designing colorwork garments. The color selection is a big draw for me and the yarn is consistent throughout the ball, both in color and strand thickness. It ifeels slightly coarse when the ball is new but it softens markedly as you knit and completely after blocking. Love it! A++++++++
Ann Moore07-21-2016 10:29am
I purchased a lot of this yarn. While the yarn itself is beautiful, especially the heathered colors, the put up of the yarn is awful. I machine knit, so I have to re-wind them onto an electric winder. Finding the inside end is nearly impossible. I don't have this problem with other yarns. In addition, I had about 10% of the balls (out of the hundreds I bought) that had multiple ends as the other reviewer indicated. Customer service and Corporate did not seem to concerned when I brought this to their attention. They tried to "teach" me to find the inner end (when I've been knitting for over 50 years!). They need to address this. My earlier (poor) review was not published. Let's see if this one makes it.
Mary06-30-2016 5:34pm
Great value and color options.
Marie04-28-2016 11:49am
I love this yarn! The colors are SO beautiful, and it's not hard to find a color that I need. I only wish that they made it in worsted or bulky weight!!
Sue Chadwick04-18-2016 8:47am
I have knit a vest kit and the Viticetum coat. The palette yarn has beautiful colors but it is too softly spun and played. It is starting to pill and I actually had to spin the balls to add more twist to the yarn as I was knitting. The coat already has some pills on the lower edge as I am completing the collar. It looks fabulous otherwise.
Megan04-15-2016 11:49am
4 out of 5 only because it's a bit scratchy. Also, occasionally there are pieces of coarse hairs in the blend.
It does knit up beautifully and the colors are miraculous, but I will probably not be purchasing this yarn for anything to use next to the skin.
Marsha03-04-2016 5:26am
The color selection is wonderful and great for projects where several colors are needed. I do find that the 2 ply is very noticeable when knitted up, but I was using larger needles than recommended for a lace piece. I did not have trouble with the ply separating, but was a tiny bit disappointed with the prominence of the 2 ply once knitted. I will try again with smaller needles and other projects
Tammy03-03-2016 11:37am
Although the colors are great, I don't care for the texture of the yarn. I work mostly with short patterns, with mixes of different colors and the yarn is wiry feeling and hard to crotchet. I used a "B" size hook, and kept having to go back through and pick up or let loose strands. Snagged and twisted. I will move onto another type - this one just didn't work for my needs.
Nichole02-25-2016 11:33pm
Needed a thin yarn with LOTS of color options for some miniature making and this yarn is absolutely perfect. The price makes it easy to buy more colors for intricate projects and it's hard to beat the color selection.
susan kimball02-04-2016 11:10am
Just finished a pair of socks in the fingering weight yarn and am very satisfied...ordering more today.
Chantelle01-11-2016 10:30am
I ordered 15 balls of Palette yarn for a Maia Shawl that I wanted to do for a friend for her birthday. I ordered Spruce, Larch Heather, and Pumice Heather. It was not as soft as I had thought it might be (although it wasn't overly scratchy either). I worked with the Spruce first and I found that the two plys often got caught when I was working but that is because I use a more pointed metal crochet hook. When I finished the project I noticed the yarn got a little softer and I soaked it in warm water and glycerin before I blocked it. It blocked so nicely and it really showed the stitch definition so well and turned out quite soft. My friend loved the scarf and the jewel tone looked so good. I would say that the colours are amazing, and it is a good value and a nice yarn.
Karen01-02-2016 4:54pm
Colors are pretty true to the photos, so it's easy to get what you want. Unless you're like me and just can't decide because there's 150 colors.
It's not oh-my-gosh soft, but it's far from scratchy wool. I'd call it a pretty neutral, inoffensive texture. It is on the lighter side of fingering weight, for anyone wondering. Thinner than the Hawthorne Fingering yarn.
I like it a lot, I just made my first colorwork hats and they're a big hit with my friends.
Chantelle12-07-2015 10:41am
I ordered this yarn on a friend's recommendation and the colours are gorgeous! I ordered Spruce, Larch Heather, and Pumice Heather. My skin is pretty sensitive to wool, and I find most wools are scratchy (except for some merino wools and baby alpaca). This is one of those scratchy wools (for those who are sensitive to it). The stitch definition is fairly nice but I am having an issue with the thread separating and my needle will get caught between the two ply's. I'm not sure that I would purchase this again unless I had a specific project for it.
Jamie S12-01-2015 8:07pm
I can't believe so many people love this yarn! It is my least favorite from all that I've tried from Knit Picks. My MIL gave me a GIANT sampler pack and I was so excited to pick out lots of projects with different color combos. I made Barbie clothes and one hat. I've had enough. Random ends everywhere and it breaks very easily - twice in one project! I have SO much of it left! Ugh!
Janet L P11-17-2015 11:09pm
No matter what other yarn I try, I always come back to Palette. It's just perfect, strong yet soft, and wonderfully springy! I try to buy a few extras everytime I shop. I never want to be without it when inspiration hits!
I can say that in all my years of knitting - over 50, this is the nicest yarn! And what beautiful colors - my wish list has almost all of them!
nancy08-17-2015 10:13pm
Just WOW !!!!
Darlene07-13-2015 1:24pm
Just received my purchase in the mail and I am so impressed! I ordered Tomato, Blue note Heather, and Forest Heather for sweaters and Blush to knit a doll. The heathered yarns have such depth of colour and the yarn it self is soft. I can see I will be ordering more of this.
Carol Clevenger05-17-2015 7:17pm
Am working on my first Fair Isle sweater and I can't believe that I waited so long. I love this yarn. It is beautiful, has a great hand and I'm thrilled with the result!
MZB04-28-2015 11:49am
I decided to try this while it was on sale and I'm glad that I did! The wool is wonderfully soft and the colors are exactly as they appear online. I would love to see it put up in 440 gr hanks.
gretchen04-01-2015 3:43pm
I made a fair isle with size 4 needles for the ribbing, size 5 for the body, and size 6 for the color work areas. Needle #3 was too tight for my style. Love this yarn!
Nic Carnes02-12-2015 11:36pm
I just ordered (and quickly received) 6 colors of palette yarn. It's incredible! I'm crocheting a stuffed animal for my niece - I've made the same pattern with a cheaply made yarn, this is a world of difference. The evenness of the yarn and the definition of the stitches is awesome. My only problem is now I only want to crochet with this yarn! The colors I ordered (semolina, oyster heather, blush, cotton candy, clover and edamame) were all true to the photos. I will be ordering tons in other colors!
Anna02-05-2015 8:32am
I love love love this yarn. I've made several pieces with it and love the feel of it while I'm working on a pattern. It also works well paired with a kid silk or mohair blend strand to make a luxurious sweater. The colors are fantastic and true! I'm addicted.
Karen01-25-2015 3:16pm
This is wonderful yarn, colorful and soft and great to work with. I have made mitts and hats with it and will try a sweater one of these days!
Davida Fernandez01-19-2015 9:08pm
I made a pair of fingerless mitts with this and just love them. It was easy to work with, feels great on my hands, and I was able to find all the colors I needed.
Donna remington12-28-2014 3:32pm
I recently bought 15 skeins of this yarn when it was on sale. It is a good value at regular price, but getting it on sale was even better! The colors are beautiful ,and I especially like the heathers. This will be my go to yarn!
laura byler12-11-2014 2:03pm
This stuff is wonderful; the colors are so vibrant, the heather colors are just gorgeous and layered, the wool is pretty soft, and so far I haven't had any trouble with color bleeding. I went a little nuts with their black friday sale and got about half of their colors and they are all amazing, I wish I had gotten the palette color card too though. It is super hard to keep track of what color is what when you have so many.
Jessica12-09-2014 6:33am
I absolutely love the palette yarn. I adore all the colors it comes in, the samplers are awesome if you need some inspiration for a color palette to make something gorgeous with, and it makes for some very soft little toys if you're in to amigurumi work, and some gorgeous light but warm scarves as well. I would LOVE to amass the entire color collection of this to have on hand in my stash some day!
Kate12-07-2014 6:06pm
I have used this yarn many times, for fair isle and for Norwegian patterns. It's a great Shetland type yarn, will pill somewhat but for the price it's a good choice especially for gifts.
Robin Drouin10-15-2014 4:11pm
This was my very first order from KnitPicks..I just received it on Monday .I have to say am so very very pleased. The colors were perfect and the feel of this yarn is awesome. I will be back for more. I would love to have it in every color!!I had seen some reviews saying the color isn't true. I did not find that. The colors were exactly what I was expecting.I can't say enough good things about this yarn!!
Colette09-14-2014 1:38pm
I really love this yarn! The colors are outstanding. I would like every color.
Margaret08-05-2014 11:20am
I love knitting with this yarn. I have used it for color work, traditional fair isle and crewel embroidery. Picking colors can be tricky online--I wish you could view analogous colors together--or that the palette color card was current and not so pricey.
Melinda07-23-2014 3:18pm
Not pleased with the dullness of the colors. I bought some to make a skirt but will not be using them for that purpose. Maybe several pairs of slippers.
Lisa07-21-2014 12:28pm
So wonderful for colorwork, lots of colors, evenly spun, no color bleed, soft but doesn't pill easily. I made couch pillows years ago and they have not pilled even with lots of use.
Miki07-06-2014 4:20pm
I Love this yarn. I usually don't buy any wool because of the roughness but my gosh. This yarn's amazing. beautiful and the price's just right! It crochet up beautiful and its so soft!
Susan Blakes05-22-2014 11:55am
This yarn is just perfect. Such a wonderful color selection. I have to thank designer Deborah Tomasello for directing me to this yarn as I love her designs and the majority of them are made from Palette! I can not truly express how much I love this yarn! Always pleased with the finished results of my projects using this yarn.
Yana05-08-2014 12:19pm
This yarn is an absolute pleasure to work with, and to play with. My favorite are the Heathered colors - so many possibilities!
I really wish we had such a wide color selection for cotton (DK and Sport weight) yarns.
thank you Knipicks. :)
tammwitten05-08-2014 9:10am
Just received my yarn today. So far I love it.
blarglznoflo04-15-2014 3:53pm
The yarn itself is nice. I received two balls of it as a gift, and they are now about halfway to becoming a scarf.
BUT...when I went to start using the first ball, I found three ends. Just right next to each other, three yarn ends. I was not going to mess with it at the time, so I instead started the scarf with the other ball. I have already discovered a break in the yarn, where about a 4" section was barely hanging on at either end. I pulled it out and joined the remainder back into the scarf, and haven't had a problem since, but for both balls to have problems is kind of worrying.
I rated "fair" because while it's a nice yarn itself, I really do not appreciate constantly having to join it back in when the ball has several splits.
Elise04-15-2014 11:32am
This is the perfect yarn for my miniature amigurumi. I crochet tiny (under 3" tall), stuffed toys and Pallette is a joy to work with. Soft, yet holds up to repeated handling jointed toys receive. I highly recommend this yarn.
Lana Winter02-12-2014 9:37am
I'd give this yarn 50 stars if I could. The colours are gorgeous, it knits into the most fantastic texture, is spot-on in terms of gauge, and is probably one of my favourite yarns of all time.
lynnielooloo02-06-2014 4:31pm
I love this yarn! It is my go-to for projects. Wonderful colour selection, and i always been thrilled with my orders. Beautiful array of colours for classic designs for me or vibrant for my teenager. Always pleased with my results when I use Palette.
Marilyn Mustain01-27-2014 12:27pm
I just love your Palette yarn. I recently doubled it and used a size 10 needle. It turned out right on gauge and is wonderfully soft. I will definitely be buying more of this. The color choices are incredible and it is so reasonably priced. I'd recommend it to everyone.
Olga12-09-2013 11:35am
I ordered the first time! Absolutely wonderful yarn! Guess the color of the lace mohair, which is also ordered. Super!
Amazing color! Thank you very very much !!!
Tate11-30-2013 2:54pm
This yarn is one of my favorite yarns ever! My favorite things to knit are entire scenes of knit landscapes and this yarn gives me all the colors I need. It is not something that can be changed I'm pretty sure, but the two plies of this yarn come apart pretty easily. Other than that this yarn is perfect!
Monica07-30-2013 12:12am
Really great yarn! The selection of colors is amazing, there's really everything you could possibly need, and the price is great too! My order came in really fast too, I'm really very happy with this all around :)
Nhung Nguyen07-14-2013 3:46am
This is hands down my favorite yarn! I make tiny amigurumi critters (crocheted animals) as a job and for my business, and this yarn is just perfect for them!
The yarn is super soft and the variety is absolutely AMAZING!
Sometimes the colors are a hit or a miss since flash makes the colors lighter on the images, but with the variety, it's not too big an issue at all when you get different shades. :D
I hope this yarn stays around for a long time because I really can't see myself using any other yarn for my creations.
Diane Brown06-04-2013 4:09am
This a great yarn for any kind of Fair Isle knitting. I have made sweaters, scarves and gloves with great results. I am now working on a mobius with diagonal stripes.
Carole Brandt05-27-2013 2:31pm
This is my go to yarn for just about any project. I ordered the sampler a few years ago & now need to update it with more colors. I love this yarn.
Heather Coulter05-21-2013 7:23pm
I absolutely love this yarn! It's a wee bit splitty, but that's mainly because I love pointy needles. It's great for lace, and color work. Oh, and I was astonished at how soft it is! Lovely, lovely wool! And all these colors to pick from! Can't say enough about this yarn, it's fantastic!
Melody Hadley05-12-2013 2:31am
I love Palette fingering yarn. It is so great to work with.
Melissa Hansen04-01-2013 2:20pm
Love the beautiful array of colors and the delicateness of this yarn.
