INDEPENDENT DESIGNER PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
We started the IDP program in 2009 as a way to develop patterns in Knit Picks’ yarns for our customers and to support independent designers by giving them exposure. Since then, it has grown to include hundreds of designers and thousands of patterns!
Designers can submit their patterns and pattern ideas for consideration to the program. We are looking for high quality, well written, professional patterns using Knit Picks yarn only. Designers retain all rights to their patterns; there is no exclusivity agreement so designers can continue to sell their patterns in other marketplaces such as Ravelry, Etsy, and personal websites. Designers also decide the selling price of their pattern, with Knit Picks retaining a base fee of 15% of the pattern selling price to cover staffing and marketing efforts.
Acceptance of patterns to the IDP program is decided by our Review Board, which includes members of the Knit Picks book, marketing, and yarn teams. We meet regularly to review submissions. Once approved, we will then be happy to provide yarn support for the project. Designers are responsible for the sample/test projects, tech edit, pattern layout, and photography.
Our IDP collection is curated with high-quality patterns only, which means only professional-level patterns will be accepted. This applies to the pattern writing, tech editing, photography, charts & schematics, and PDF layout design. Once designers have a pattern in the IDP program, they are given access to a web portal to check sales and upload new pattern ideas.
