The Tapatoru Cowl is a fun and bold design with a touch of culture, that will make a very fashionable accessory piece for the colder months to come. The color work inspiration behind the Tapatoru cowl comes from Maori taniko patterns, a traditional form of weaving used to decorate clothing by the indigenous people of New Zealand. This particular taniko pattern is called "aronui" - mainly identifiable by the alternating triangular bases. The cowl is knit top down, first starting in the round to knit the cowl body with the aronui motif worked all around, then worked flat, decreasing to the triangular tip, with one repeat of the motif worked down the middle. Knitting the color-work both in the round and flat will provide an interesting, but not difficult, challenge to many knitters. After binding-off for the triangular tip, stitches will be picked up around the top and bottom, for an I-cord edging to polish things up. As a final touch, fringes or a tassel can be added to the bottom portion.
