The Andean Chullo uses brightly colored stranded designs to depict patterns and motifs found in the traditional hat worn by Andean men, women and children. Keeping with the customary style of the Chullo hats, the solid colored motifs are set against a shifting-color background. This stranded colorwork hat shows off small geometric patterns, such as little waves, spirals or tilting bricks, which are often found in Andean artwork. These smaller motifs are then set against either a band of alpacas or spiraling ripples. Multiple charts let you pick and choose motifs to place on the earflaps, hat and along the crown. Knit from the earflaps up, the hat is finished off with applied i-cord and tassels. Pattern has four color ways

Finished Measurements: Adult M (about 20-21" head circumference)

I love this pattern and its variations. The only trouble I had was is following the directions for applied i-cord as written in pattern. Followed slightly different directions found on YouTube and was more satisfied with the results. I have never used applied i-cord before

Try making this hat in Chroma, choose a graduated color and a solid. Really beautiful and soft.

How many of these hats have I made? At least four. This has to be one of my all-time favorite patterns. I've made it in Palette and I also made it in Chroma (one graduated in Supernova with White and Gray for contrast.) It's slightly tricky to do colorwork on flat knitting but after you practice, the flaps come out great and the rest of the hat is knitting in the round, easy enough. I'll probably make another!
