Lovespoon Socks
Lovespoons ~ wooden spoons, intricately carved to exhibit the skill of the craftsperson, were given as gifts of romantic intent as far back as the mid-1600s. Intertwining cables and hearts were common themes in these tokens of affection.
The tiny hearts and cables in the central motif of these socks are a delightful echo of these symbols and create a wonderfully updated reflection of this endearing tradition.
These toe-up socks showcase the beauty of Bavarian (twisted stitch) cables. They begin with a barn toe which uses varying rates of increases that mimic the shape of a hipped barn roof. The twisted-stitch cable patterns are worked on the instep, back and front leg. The sole is worked in Stockinette stitch. The gusset increases are worked at each side of the sole. The heel is turned using a short row heel cap which means no picking up stitches. The heel flap is worked in Eye of Partridge stitch pattern.
To work the recommended bind off, knitters need to be able to 'read their knitting', i.e. identify knit or purl stitches as they present themselves.
Stitch pattern is charted with written directions provided.
