Patricia Duncan's Jennie's Lace provides instructions for 6 projects inspired by antique edgings from the late 19th century: 3 scarves, a cowl, a wrap, and a luxurious scarf which doubles as a light wrap. All garments are made from a variety of lace-weight yarns: baby alpaca, merino wool, or kid mohair/silk. The garments vary in complexity from easy to intermediate and advanced. All designs are charted.

Jennie's Lace is not only a book of patterns but a tribute to an unknown knitter in rural upstate New York who left behind a box of artifacts eventually offered at auction: hand written instructions on lined paper for 4 knitted edgings. Pinned to each page is a tiny sample of each edging, crafted from fine cotton yarn on small knitting wires. Accompanying the instructions is a scrap book into which Jennie pasted dozens of patterns cut from contemporary magazines.

In the course of documenting these finds for the journal of the local historical society, the author felt that knitters would be interested in this window into the past of an ordinary woman. The author translates the written instructions into modern terminology, provides a chart for each edging, and uses each edging as the basis for an up-to-the-minute modern garment. Photos of the original artifacts accompany those of the finished garments.
