Welcome to the Independent Designer Partnership Program!
We started the IDP program over 10 years ago, and it has grown to include over 800 designers and nearly 4000 patterns. We have recently relaunched our new and improved program and are excited to partner with our favorite designers!
Designers can submit their patterns and pattern ideas for consideration for inclusion on the website. We are looking for high quality, well written professional patterns using Knit Picks yarn. Designers retain all rights to their patterns; there is no exclusivity agreement so designers can continue to sell their patterns in other marketplaces such as Ravelry, Etsy, and personal websites. Designers also decide the selling price of their pattern, with Knit Picks retaining a base fee of 15% of the pattern selling price to cover staffing and marketing efforts.
While we love to see all sorts of designs, including garments, accessories, toys, and home décor, we do have particular yarns and projects we would like to see as IDP patterns in upcoming promotions. These are listed here and updated quarterly.
Acceptance of patterns to the IDP program is decided by our Review Board, which includes members of the Knit Picks book, marketing, and yarn teams. We meet approximately once a month to review submissions. Once approved, we will then be happy to provide yarn support for the project. Designers are responsible for the sample/test projects, tech edit, and pattern layout.
After the pattern is fully completed and submitted by the designer, the Review Board then evaluates the final pattern. Our IDP collection is curated with high-quality patterns only, which means only professional-level patterns will be accepted; this applies to the pattern writing, tech editing, photography, charts & schematics, and PDF layout design. We do provide high-quality photography at no charge if the designer’s photographs do not meet our standards; however, this can delay the pattern’s release on the site.
Patterns are released on the site approximately every 6 weeks; knitting patterns are listed on the Knit Picks site and crochet patterns can be listed on both the Knit Picks and WeCrochet sites. Once designers have a pattern in the IDP program, they are given access to a web portal to check sales and upload new pattern ideas.
