Vancouver, WA- It’s back to school time and parents and students everywhere are loading up on the usual school supplies- paper, pens, pencils, and for 15 students at the Platte Cove School in Elka Park, knitting needles. This year they can cross those needles off their shopping lists because Vancouver, Washington based company, Knit Picks has donated a pair of needles for each student involved in the school’s charity knitting program.

Students at this unique, computer free, private school choose to spend their quiet time knitting for charity while their teachers read out loud to them. Students involved in the project range in age from 7-14 and have knit hats and sweaters for needy children in Africa and the Middle East which are delivered by PET International, and blankets for Project Linus, a non-profit that provides security blankets to children who are traumatized or seriously ill. Even first and second graders at Platte Cove have mastered the knit stitch to make knitted squares that were stitched together into a blanket for Project Linus. Several students even knit squares for quilts over their summer break!

Knit Picks’ Vice President Tina Birch elaborates, “These students demonstrate the essence of the joy of hand knitting – exercising their hands, hearts and minds at the same time and for the benefit of many. We’re so pleased to support their charity efforts and their education.”
