Hawthorne Tonal Hand Paint

$12.99 100g / Hank

This beguiling twist on our sturdy, vibrant, superwash sock yarn is carefully hand painted in vibrant colors with variations in hue, bringing shifting depths to Hawthorne’s unquestionable color. These handpainted lovelies draw almost entirely from similar tones and analogous colors, providing a subtle and sophisticated counterpoint to the wild chromo-diversity of Hawthorne Multi.

A classic high twist gives this the bounce and resilience Hawthorne is known for, great for the same things the yarn family does best: socks, shawls, and brilliant, durable accessories. The rich variation of Tonal is perfect for larger garments, like sweaters and shells, where its color can get the attention it deserves.

Welcome to the family, Tonal!

Please note: Hawthorne is a hand painted yarn and colors may vary from skein to skein.

Grants Pass colorway came exactly as expected and looks as the description claims. Yarn holds up extremely well, even after having been ripped out multiple times. Gets very soft after initial (hand) washing. Would purchase again; no pilling, and looks much more expensive than it is.

Just received my order of this yarn and am delighted with the color and softness of it. It seems to knit very easily without splitting and I will definitely order this again.

I do like this yarn, however two of the colours I ordered were nothing like the descriptions or photos. Eugene was an almost solid very dark brown and Kalamath falls an almost black navy,no tonal variations in them at all.I think the quality control could be a lot better.I know they are hand painted and expect variation but solids are not tonal!

I love knitting with this yarn, so far nothing unexpected in this type of dyeing, the Vancouver did tint my hands, but no problem once washed. I hope the full range of shades come back, as I adore Happy Valley and others. I had plans to make something (just have not decided what yet) with skeins named after the places in Oregon that I lived growing up.

I am in love with this yarn. The stitch definition is great. I will echo the sentiments of others .... I would love a DK or worsted. I have played with mixing colours and doubling up for hats and mitts as well as a child's sweater. Klamath Falls in the tonal and Eliot in Hawthorne multi was especially nice knit together.

Grants Pass is just ....brown. A dark, very warm, brown. Definitely no pops of charcoal, no silvery taupe highlights. Very disappointed.

The colors are so understated but elegant. I love how high-end this line looks. I have Klamath Falls and just got Astoria for a project - I plan on using Silverton in the future. Perfect colors for making a capsule wardrobe. I would love these in DK, then I'd make my entire wardrobe in all of thedifferent shades of this line.

I bought Sweet Home, Rockaway and Hood River. They were exactly the colours I expected, apart from one of the Sweet Home skeins which is slightly paler and has much less variation than the others. The yarn is nice to knit with, and I’ll definitely buy more because I love all the colours.

Beautiful colors! Would love to see these in heavier weight yarn. For me sport w

Gorgeous colors! Wish they were available in Sport weight or DK. I noticed someone else would be interested in worsted or chunky.

My first purchase of this yarn arrived today - I have previously used the Hawthorne Speckle and Kettle Dye so I knew this would not be as soft as Stroll but I actually prefer that in some ways - Stroll does not feel as hard wearing and can be a little fluffy to knit with. The colour of the yarn (Eugene) is beautiful - this looks so expensive but was a real steal! Can’t wait to knit myself a garment in this yarn. I agree that a DK weight/wider range of colours would be lovely, but I love the muted colour range currently available - eminently wearable.

I love this yarn - easy to work with, colors are great, and it softens with the first wash. What I don't like is the somewhat short skein. I have to get 2 skeins to make socks for many of the people in my family, that leaves me grumpy about being forced to spend twice as much and I have too many partial skeins left in my stash. If they would just make it 400 yards (I buy other brands of sock yarn that have 410-420), it would be perfect.

I really love the texture of this yarn. The variation of the color (Silverton) is wonderful from clear to darker grey.....wow...!!!

I love the colors even though they all are a bit similar. I really wish this came in a heavier weight for sweaters, worsted especially would be great.

Love the colors. I would buy this if it can in Sport or DK.

First of all I love Hawthorne. I'm not disappointed in the quality, but the colors weren't what I expected. I ordered silverton and rockaway on tonal and kerns on multi and they all 3 looked like the exact same color. I returned the two tonal color ways. I would love to see this yarn in worsted weight for sweaters and in more colors in tonal!

These new color ways for Hawthorne are STUNNING. I had to buy every color and was delighted when my box arrived this morning. My skeins in real life looked just like the pictures on the Knit Picks website. I especially like the deep blue violet of Corvallis and the deep, cool reds in Hood River and Eugene. Well done Knit Picks!

OMG! I want all of them! I agree a worsted would be amazing, actually I was going to say DK, but your yarns run a bit light so your worsted works beautifully for most DK projects. I have been so wanting something with subtle coloration like this for a long time. I've used stroll tonal and love it, but this, this is above and beyond. Please add weights and colors.

These colors are just exquisite. If Hawthorne is ever available in a worsted weight, I'd buy and use LOTS.

I take machine washable fingering yarn and double it so you have a wonderful worsted weight yarn. Great for baby blankets.
