The Principles of Knitting

$39.99 33% off
Retail: $60.00

Knitting mentors have some very forgivable and natural shortcomings: No index or table of contents, physical needs like eating and sleeping, an inability to fit in tote bags, etc. However, The Principles of Knitting provides a gloriously inanimate guru, untiring and hugely accessible. A word-of-mouth phenomena since its original publication, The Principles of Knitting has served as a treasured resource for an entire generation. Now completely revised and updated, this smart balancing act of inspiration and instruction is one reference guide no knitter should be without.

This is the best book out on learning everything about knitting. The best part is chapter 23, it's a pattern design that includes a Stitch gauge.... not even designers know to tell you how to do it properly but this book does. It is a must in a knitters library.

4 out of 5 stars

This book is a well-researched, encyclopedic overview of all things having to do with knitting. I didn't give it an excellent rating for a couple of reasons: the author is too strident in her "most do" or "can't do" ... this turns folks off knitting! Also, she renames classic techniques and stitches (and uses her own charting symbols) rather than going with standards that are out there (not official, but folks are used to them). I like this book as a reference for unusual techniques or to get inspiration ... but I think there are better resources out there than this.

This book is probably excellent for what it does offer, but it wasn't at all what I expected. Instead of a treasure trove of how-to's, it's exactly what the title says: Principles. If you want to order this volume, I suggest that you visit a bookstore or your LYS and look it over in person first.
