I am working my way through the patterns in this book. Note: I use this book for the stitch patterns only. I have my own heel and toe that works for me and use for any sock I make (no matter what the pattern says). I'm enjoying the patterns. Most of them start with a purl stitch, though. If you are averse to starting the needle off with a purl stitch or doing a lot of purling, this may not be the book for you.

I was very excited about this book but have found it somewhat disappointing. First of all I'd like multiple sizes rather than just one. Also I spent a fair amount of time checking my gauge and used larger needles so the gauge would be right but the resulting socks are very loose even on my husband. Finally and most frustratingly the toe up gusset heel section is just plain wrong; the numbers don't work out and if you look closely at the accompanying picture you can tell that the picture shows a cuff down sock, so it appears that no one bothered to even check the pattern.

I have made several pairs of machine knit socks. This book helped me make my first hand knit socks. It is a book I will use often.

Here's the math on those patterns: 3 patterns each for cuffs, toes, and heels, plus 12 stitch patterns. 3 heels [3 toes (3 cuffs * 12 stitch patterns)]=324 possible combinations.

Not worth the price even on sale. Very disappointed.
