Not entirely what I was expecting. A third of the book is devoted to decorative edgings, most of which appear to be designed with heavy wear-and-tear in mind. Another third is dedicated to motifs, largely in the Irish style, but with no suggestions how to join them; quite a trick when a great many of them are not square. Happily the good old fashioned stitch patterns I was looking for are not duplicates from the other two stitch libraries I own. The section for beginners is not sufficient for a beginner to start with this book and, while both written instructions and charts are provided with a few pages outlining on how to read them, it would require dedication to the task if you were to use this book as a guide to learn a method you don't know. Overall the book is decent, I know I will use the patterns and might even pick up some familiarity with charts. It lives up to half of its title - there are 500 patterns but this is by no means the ultimate crochet stitch bible.
