Wool of the Andes Worsted Yarn

$1.58 - $2.42 50g / ball

Our classic worsted wool yarn is spun and plied carefully to achieve a wonderfully balanced twist. A sturdy yet soft yarn with excellent stitch definition and heirloom durability. Peruvian sheep are a cross between Corriedale (for the sturdiness) and Merino (for the softness), producing a strong fiber with an excellent softness quotient for a wide variety of uses. Felts beautifully. Retail: $2.69

“This yarn knits up great, I love knitting with it! I made a sweater with it that has become one of my favorites. It's hard to believe it only costs $1.99 a ball. I've bought very expensive, high-end yarn that's not half as soft Wool of the Andes.” Daily Knitter, Rebecca

"Wool of the Andes is a reasonably priced yarn with a nice selection of colors. It has 110 yards on the skein. When I first knit with it, I thought it was a thin worsted. However, it knitted to a worsted gauge. First impressions can be deceiving! It's a great yarn for fulling. The fabric is sturdy enough for a tote bag." Daily Knitter, Janice

“Knit Picks- great yarn; great prices. I used Wool of the Andes for my Enchanted Forest Fingerless gloves and it is strong, the colors are vibrant, and the cost was low. I used 3 skeins for two gloves, and it cost me $2.19 per skein plus shipping- under $10!” www.zoescheffy.blogspot.com, February 2009

“I just wanted to send you some kudos. On his 40th birthday my brother asked me to make him a new sweater, to be delivered by his 41st. I quickly found an Aran sweater on your site, and ordered a color card of Wool of the Andes so he could pick the color. I delivered it to him today. The first thing he said when he picked it up was 'Wow, this is really soft.' He put it on, and the first thing he noticed was that it did not itch. He is very sensitive to wool, and expects it to be itchy. "Does it have something special, like lambs wool, or (if he knew to say 'merino' at this point, he would have said that). No, it was just your state-of-the-art-and-immensely-affordable yarn. I don't know how you pull off such high quality at such low prices, but thank you!" -Elena L., Knit Picks customer

I use wool as the weft yarn in small tapestries. I often separate worsted weight wool into its individual strands and then combine strands to make up a weft yarn of a thickness and color [or color mix] to meet the needs of a particular section of a tapestry. WOTA, a 4 strand worsted, separates easily with my 'de-spinning' technique. The available colors are more than adequate for my needs, and I love the fact that I don't have to take out a loan to build up a decent color 'palette'. The yarn 'packs' well and the individual strands are quite consistent in size and strength.

Love this yarn for my felting project-beer sweaters(aka cozies). I felt them in the washing machine & they shrink in about 2 - 16 minute cycles with less fiber fuzz in the water than other yarns I have used. Great color options as well!

Back for MORE of this yarn. The only real WHITE I've found for felting. So nice to touch it's a pleasure to work with. The new project is a felt purse with one side looking imitating the first wave Navajo chief's blanket that sold for over $300,000. Other side will be another southwest design. I'm sure I'll have it figured out by the time I finish the first side. :D

I just love the colours. They are alive and make beautiful finished pieces. The cost is also very reasonable and every time I look at some samples, I always end up starting a new project. I specially find Sapphire Heather appealing.

I love this yarn, it is my favorite. I have very sensitive skin and this doesn't irritate my skin. All the colors are great.

Love this yarn! My favorite color is Aubergine.

I have skin that's easily irritated, so I'm very picky about clothing fibers. I sampled 8 colors of this yarn and was gobsmacked that it was soft enough to wear against my neck and face (scarves and hats with no lining). It has moderate springy-ness, medium grab, and nice tight twist, so your projects don't develop halos. A great yarn to practice with if you're a beginner (like me). It holds up even with repeated knitting and unraveling, knitting too tightly, and multiple washings.

I just recieved this yarn so haven't knitted it yet but it's just beautiful. The colours are brilliant and it seems very soft. I can't wait to use it!!!!

This is a great felting yarn. It is my go-to for felted slippers at a very economical price point. Everyone who receives a pair raves about them. There are a multitude of color choices. However, as with all fiber, some colors felt better and/or faster than others. Avocado (green) and Crush (pink) work better than Yonder (light blue).

I made a sweater for my husband out of the coal. I entered it in the Topsfield fair and won a ribbon. This yarn knits easily. Cables look great. The coal is hard to see but worth the effort.

You cannot buy wool of this quality any where else for this price it is very very soft and of high quality makes beautiful projects that last a life time. It felts really well too! Love this stuff.

I like this yarn. I like it a lot.the color is consistent, it is generally very even an nice. I have bought much worse yarn for the same price. This yarn is so good that I was very surprised to find that about halfway through a ball of my WOTA worsted in silver I found that three of the plies disappeared, leaving only one thin ply of yarn to knit with, then for about a yard there were little knots and pills. I just cut out this little bad portion and threw it away, no big deal, but I was just surprised. I bought about 30 balls of this all at once and only about four feet of 9900 had any problem. I would recommend anyone to use this yarn.

I bought this yarn to make Doll sweaters. It is beautiful, easy to work with and has an amazing feel. I would recommend it to all!

This yarn knits up so spongy and warm. One recipient of my sweaters wears it to football games, and says nothing keeps him so warm. It feels good to knit, feels good to wear, and I love all the color choices. Not to mention that the price is GREAT.

It's the first time I'm buying in this site. The service is excellent. I could made many project about this yarn. In the beginning I'm scared by the quality and time to wait for having but I'm really grateful because the yarns are really that I' waiting for and not expensive too. Thank you Knit Picks .

This is my go-to yarn for projects that need to be warm, durable and inexpensive. Last winter, I made dog toys and my favorite ski hat from this yarn. It's got plenty of body, enough spring, and holds up nicely to snow and wind. Additionally, once ends are woven in, they stay in place better than most of the other wools and acrylics I've worked with. If you have sensitive skin like mine, it is worth making a headband out of something softer and cushier, like Swish, as a buffer for the ears and forehead.
