A reflection of the great Northwest, Hawthorne is a yarn inspired by the varied and vibrant place we call home. This yarn is gorgeous, soft, and a pleasure to work with. Winding it was easy and it just flowed through my fingers as I worked with it. The gloves I made are a gift for someone, but I'm looking forward to making something for myself with this yarn. I have several more skeins headed my way.

Love it! Beautiful colors and very soft.

I ordered two skeins to start. Both very easy to unwind. The colors are deep and rich. The yarn is easy to knit with and soft in my hands. It's also very resilient. I love it and have just picked out 6 more colors I want!

I have been looking at this yarn a long time and finally ordered 1 skein. I received it yesterday and had to wind it immediately. I had no trouble winding it, unlike some other reviewers. Maybe they fixed the problem on the newer shipments. I ordered Sauvie Island. The colors are not like they appeared on the website. It says it is hand dyed so each skein is different. On the site, it showed greens, browns and orange/yellow. My skein appeared to just have shades of green and the orange/yellow - not necessarily a bad thing - just different than pictured. I immediately cast on and started a pair of socks. The yarn had a tighter twist that many sock yarns which makes the yarn denser - hence getting just 357 yards in 100 grams. Again, not necessarily a bad thing - just different. Others complained about it being hard on their hands - it is a hard dense yarn - again not necessarily bad. I hope it will soften when washed. I have several inches of the toe of the sock done and it is working up beautifully, not pooling at all. I will wait to see how the socks feel when worn before I order more. All in all, a beautiful yarn.

I recently purchased Hawthorne in the colour Happy Valley. On the skein it was gorgeous, and was just as beautiful once wound in a ball. I did have a small "snag"; while winding where there seemed to be a knot, but was able to sort it out in no time. To my surprise it wasn't as soft as I thought it might be, and was a bit hard on the fingers. I made a vintage vogue hat with it and it turned out beautifully. Hopefully it'll wash up softer.

I order one of this hanks; but when I received it I had to order a second hank it is so beautiful. No complaints here. Rose City is my favorite. Thanks Knitpicks. Fast shipping too!

I had 10g of yarn leftover from making Cookie A's Monkey socks in a ladies size 8. So all those worried about running out of yardage on your socks: you should be fine unless you're knitting socks for a Sasquatch. ;-) This is one of those yarns that looks completely different in the hank vs. caked vs. knit up. I'm really happy with the look of the finished product.

The colours of the yarns are AWESOME. I've knitted with Alameda, The Pearl, Mt. Tabor, and they're all gorgeous. I have Irvington but in the hank I have their isn't a very variegated nature to it, it's all one shade of blue. I love Alameda in hexipuffs because it looks spacey. But the reason for the low rating, IT IS A COMPLETE PAIN TO WIND. I don't have a swift but I have wound their Stroll lines with no problem, but when I use my system to wind Hawthorne, I find the yarn twists around the hank from the outside of the hank to the inside. Also the fibres catch on each other and the hank will flop about when winding it and tangles like no tomorrow. It always takes over an hour maybe even two to wind it. I've wound five hanks of the stuff since it's been released, and I can only wind one a day because it's so exhausting and my patience couldn't handle the tangles. I'm making a new knitting rule, that if someone wants something knitted in this yarn brand, they have to wind it. It's seriously THAT BAD. Beautiful yarn, but because it is such a pain to wind, I will be very cautious buying it from now on, but I probably won't since I now have the yardage to finish my project. Also short yardage, SUCKS.

I love this yarn! The colors are vibrant and exactly as shown. The yarn very sturdy yet soft. Others noted that they had problems with winding the skein, but the yarn was perfect on the skein I received. I have several other projects planned for this gorgeous yarn.

I love this yarn and I was just a small amount short for the shawl I was working on. It was on backorder waiting till Aug. I asked to be notified when it came in. Didn't happen and now it says its on sale. Still I I love this yarn.

I can not say enough about this yarn....LOVE IT! It is soft, a pleasure to work with, beyond vibrant, and I can not wait for more stock to come in!

I love the colors but most were unavailable when I wanted to purchase. Certainly the colors are gorgeous. However, my skein of Goose Hollow was impossible to wind from the swift. I had an inkling that something was not right when I saw the tangled mess on one section. Almost sent it back. After hours of painstaking de-tangling and winding, I started knitting and the wool was soft and squishy and colors did not pool. There were a couple of uneven nubs. This is a lovely yarn at a price well below similar hand-dyed yarns. However, there needs to be more careful skeining at the manufacturer's end. I thought I got an errant skein but it seems from the reviews I am not alone. I've wound hundred of balls and the only problem I've had before was with Araucania which I've never used again. Given the lovely colors and feel of this yarn, I may give it another try.

I ordered four skeins of this yarn hoping to make several pairs of socks. the yarn doesn't go very far and I barely made a pair of socks from each skein. Will mix and match the leftovers to eek out another pair. I will not buy this yarn again because it is very hard on the fingers. It's not as soft as the other sock yarns Knit Picks sells. I will stick to the old and tried of which there are plenty of color choices.

2 out of 5 stars

The colors are gorgeous but my Goose Hollow was seriously tangled and required 2 hours of laborious unwinding. I could not use my swift and ball winder. I've wound hundreds of skeins of yarn over the years and the only other brand with this problem was Araucania, which I have never used again. I may give this another try in another color way because is is beautiful and soft.

I am in love with this beautiful yarn! The colors are absolutely gorgeous. This is yarn is even more beautiful and luxurious in person. I can't wait to order more! Well done knitpicks simply breathtaking!

I am a sock-yarn connoisseur and IMO this yarn ranks right up there with popular hand-dyed brands like KPPPM but at half the price. I made a pair of womens' size 8 socks and used up most of the skein, so those knitting larger sizes beware. The fabric is thick and spongy, and I think the socks will wear well. I'm definitely buying more!

This yarn makes a serious impact on your eyes - it was gorgeous when I received it. I ordered Ladd's Addition, Eastbank, and Laurelhurst. I did not have the same problems with knots or tangles that some of the other reviewers had - I spent a few hours carefully winding it into a center pull ball, and thus got to admire it further. My first project with it has been some fingerless wrist warmers in the Eastbank, and I've been satisfied with the yarn knitting up nicely. I just can't wait for more of the colorways to become available again - I want to stock up on this yarn, it is simply stunning.

5 out of 5 stars

I ordered two skeins each of Ladd's Addition, and Sunnyside. I am very pleased with the colour being true to what is shown on the site. I will absolutely order more. The Sunnyside is knitting up beautifully with no snags, knots or other problems. I've substituted it for a much more expensive yarn in a Botanical Garden Shawl pattern from Ravelry. How it lives up to my usual criteria: Colour: The colours are true to what was shown on the site and are lovely and modern. The two skeins of Sunnyside are consistent with each other, have a lovely tonal shift which looks great across a long knit piece, and won't be distracting for an easy lace. While they show the same lot #, the two skeins of Ladd's Addition differ greatly, with light touches of pink/coral in one, and much larger swaths in the other, but the purple tones are similar, so they do match. These are definitely hand dyed, but it will limit project options. Softness: The Hawthorne is soft and pleasing, but quite not as soft and luxurious as my favourite merino/nylon blend from Indigodragonfly. Value: The Hawthorne Fingering comes in around 1/3 to 1/2 the price of my favourite Merino/Nylon blend, so it will be a frequent purchase, especially for gifts on a budget or large projects. It's a great value.

Buyer Beware! Although this is a lovely new yarn, one skein is just 357 yds., and not enough yarn for 2 socks. :(. I love the colors and bought 4, but the first she in only got me to 2" down the second foot. I have been a real fan of all KnitPicks sock yarns, and do hope that the co. will add yardage to this new line soon.

I am using Hawthorne Fingering Mt Tabor and I love this yarn. It knits up very nice and does not split. I really think this is going to be my favorite sock yarn. Thank you Knit Picks for a yarn this sock knitter can be proud of. Excellent rating all the way.

I have gotten 2 hanks of the new Hawthorne yarn and one of them (Belmont). wound into a ball nicely, but the other one, (Goose Hollow), gave me fits getting it wound into a ball. It tangled very badly, and it took me a couple of hours to get it to wind correctly and undoing all the knots and "out of place loops." This is nothing compared to the problem my sister, Alice Anderson, had with the Rose City yarn. It tangled hopelessly for her to the point that she began to cut it to remove the knots and tangles. It is now in a zip-lock bag and for now she has put it aside as hopeless. Please advise. Never in our 30 some years of knitting have we either one had this problem.

GORGEOUS yarn. The pictures do not do it justice. When I opened my box and saw it, I gasped. And it is an absolutely joy to work with. Great job on this one! Fabulous.

I purchased five different colors and three of the five were tangled. Never have had this problem before Hawthorne. But, the colors are so very nice and the texture of the yarn will be fun. Am making yoga socks for my daughter in Portland. How fitting! She likes the Pearl district and the Pearl color scheme.

Just my opinion but Hawthorne is simply gorgeous. I've rarely touched hand painted before because they just, well, never looked very interesting. But Hawthorne is different. It's a nice blend of calm colors that work together with a splash color that makes you just love it when you see it. All that to say I love this new yarn :) And sincerely hope it's around for a long while. Kudos on a lovely new yarn kp.

This yarn seems amazing although I have not started knitting with it yet. I love the colors! I have been waiting for years for KP to make beautiful hand painted yarns for affordable prices. Please make this yarn in worsted!

5 out of 5 stars

I haven't actually knit with this yet, (although, wow!! it looks fantastic) just wanted to suggest to anyone who finds it less appealing than other sock yarns from KP due to the yardage, that it IS actually the standard 100 grams, and therefore the "same." Maybe a whisker heavier, perhaps, but you'll still get two socks from a skein, albeit, a little shorter.

5 out of 5 stars

Overall an excellent yarn. I just received 6 skeins and wound them all into balls, not a single snarel. I love the slight gloss to the yarn and love the tight twist. Only drawback is the shortish yardage, but with a more tightly spun yarn that's unavoidable. Also absolutely love the colorways, could have been made for me. I do love deep, strongly saturated color though.

I was really excited to order this yarn and am making a lightweight crocheted sweater with it, with the "Sauvie island" variation. I have found several abnormalities in the two skeins that I have made balls out of so far (out of the eight ordered), odd thicknesses and matting in the yarn that I've needed to cut out.. It is absolutely beautiful, hand-dyed yarn. However, if you are making socks, bear this in mind (especially if you're going to need multiple hanks) - there is so much difference in coloration between hanks, even from the same dye lot. Over half of the hanks I ordered do have purple and blue hues in them, with very vibrant orange, but the others don't have blue or purple in them at all - just greens/browns/oranges and they're paler. The labels all claim they're from the same dye lot. Not sure how that's going to look in my sweater but we'll see.... Can't really say that this makes me want to order more of this yarn, but we'll see in the future once I'm finished with my project.

This yarn looks like pearl cotton (if you crochet, you are familiar with it.) But it's wool and nylon. The finish has a sheen and the has enough twist that it makes a slightly unbalanced stitch; the right leg in stockinette is more prominent than the left leg. It's a pleasing texture. The color changes are reminiscent of Stroll Tonal; some colors (Belmont, for example or Nob Hill) are more monotonal than others that have a wider range of hues. It's a bit like Gloss crossed with Tonal and it's a very nice yarn for socks or shawls.

4 out of 5 stars

This yarn is beautiful and soft. I didn't buy it for socks but to make a spring/summer weight scarf. I am very disappointed in how the yarn arrived. The hank was so tangled it took over six hours to get the yarn into a ball so I could use it. I don't know if this was an issue with this one hank or if it's a problem with the yarn. I won't buy it again for this reason. If you don't mind that one issue, it's a lovely yarn.

5 out of 5 stars

The yarn looks lovely, the colours intriguing - but the yardage is so much less than I am used to in Knit Picks sock yarn. I don't even consider purchasing sock yarns in less than 400 yard quantities and would need three to make two pairs - sigh!

This new yarn looks stunning! I am very excited! I want to congratulate you and say thank you that you added this yarn to your line. Great job, Knit Picks! I have not ordered this yet but I cannot wait. From the looks of it and judging by the quality of your other yarns, this will be my top choice to go to!
