“Anyone who’s ever hand-dyed sock yarn, or knit from a skein of hand-dyed sock yarn, has been bedeviled by pooling colors. Knit Picks has a new product which takes the guesswork out of dyeing sock yarn. Sock Blanks are pre-knit tubes of undyed sock yarn. You dye the pre-knit tube with the stripes that you want, then knit your socks directly off the tube. Somehow this seems like cheating, but in a good way.” Yarn Scoop

“The Knit Picks blank is a double-stranded flat length of knitted material that you can easily hand-dye a striped pattern using acid dyes. You can also do other effects such as this gradated technique which really appeals to me. What’s even more fun… you can knit socks 2 at a time directly from the blank and the striping pattern will be identical on both socks! How brilliant is that? I love knitting socks two-at-a-time and this completely takes away the issue of having the two balls tangling around each other.” MandiKnits.com

“For those who like the idea of knitting from a flat but would like to dye their own, Knit Picks developed Bare Sock Yarn Dye Blanks. The 462-yard blank is double stranded. That means your socks can match and be knit 2 at a time.” Knitting Purls, July 2008

These are so much fun! I've really enjoyed playing with putting color on these. My colors all came out beautiful and have stayed bright and vibrant after many washes. I knit up my socks 2 at once with no problem! I have also wound one of these into 2 separate balls...if you have 2 ball-winders or 2 people, it's quick and easy. I'll definitely be getting more :)

I was really excited to try these sock blanks. They make striping yarn so much easier to dye. Once I dyed the yarn though, and started unwinding, I was really disappointed. First off, the yarn is knit into the blank double stranded...no big deal, I expected that from the description. What I did not expect though, was for it to be cut, so that it's really 2 50g skeins knit up. Unwinding this was a NIGHTMARE. Also, when you dye, no matter how strong your dye or how soaked it is, the yarn winds up looking tweedy. What I mean is that amongst the stripes of color there are white undyed speckles. My experiment in striping yarn the easy way ended up taking longer than winding the yarn off into sections and dyeing it. The yarn is alright, but I won't be bothering with these blanks again. I can however see how, if you were knitting 2 at a time socks, these would be less of a hassle, if you were to knit directly from the blank, as shown in the tutorial here: http://tutorials.knitpicks.com/wptutorials/sock-blank-dyeing/
