The Salor socks are named after one of the oldest and most distinguished Turkmen tribes, dating as far back as the eleventh century. Today, a small group of people who still use the Salor name live in the city of Herat, located in northern Afghanistan. Although differences between Turkmen rugs are very subtle to the untrained eye, Salor rugs are commonly red and feature columns of octagonal motifs, known as guls.
