Begin Color Patterns:

You are now going to set aside approximately 6" of stitches in the front to shape a square neck on the cardigan.

Slip the last 20 (22, 24, 26, 28, 30) stitches, the 7 steek stitches and the first 20 (22, 24, 26, 28, 30) sts of the round to a piece of scrap yarn or stitch holder. (This ensures that the pattern will mirror itself after you cut the neck shaping steek.) Break off the yarn, leaving a 3" tail to weave in later.

Using the backward loop method, cast on the 7 stitches you need to continue the steek. You will have a funny looking "kangaroo pouch," but it will shape up once you cut both sections of steeking later. Now you can finish knitting the last 3" of the body.

Knit one round in the current heather color, being sure to cast off the steek stitches here.

After binding off the steek stitches, separate the garment into sections: place 44 (48, 55, 62, 69, 73) stitches on a piece of scrap yarn for the right front, 143 (155, 173, 191, 209, 221) stitches on a separate strand of scrap yarn for back, and 44 (48, 55, 62, 69, 73) stitches on a separate piece of scrap yarn for the left front.

Joining the sleeves to the body

Starting at the outer shoulder edge and working toward the neck, skip the first four sts on both front and back (8 sts total), then place 40 (44, 51, 58, 65, 69) stitches from the back onto a working needle. Do the same for the left front.

Using 3-needle bind off (see http://community.knitpicks.com/notes if you are unfamiliar with this technique), join the front and back together at the shoulders. Repeat for the right side. There should now be 8 open sts at each shoulder corner; these will act as the armscye steek. There are 55 (59, 63, 67, 71, 75) sts remaining across the back neck.

1) In the chart key the definition for p2tog tbl should read: “purl 2 stitches together through the back loop.”

2) The armhole borders are 4 stitches wide in stockinette. Under “Shape Back Armhole and Yoke” after “Next Row, (RS): …” the WS row instruction is missing. It should be: “WS: p4, maintain patt to last 4 sts, p4.”

3) Under “Shape Front Armhole and Yoke”, the single decrease section (4th paragraph) should read: “WS: p4, maintain patt to last 4 sts, p4.”

4)Under “Side Shaping” the last paragraph should read:  Note: In the last dec rnd for size Small and the last 2 dec rnds for size Large, the dec will meet up with the purl channel of the Wide Rib pat at each end of the back. Odds & Ends Pocket

Next RS row: Knit across the first 19 sts of the row. Place the remaining 18 sts on a holder or scrap yarn

Odds & Ends Pocket (rewritten a bit)
The Odds & Ends pocket is similar to a sweatshirt-type pocket, except with straight, not sloping, sides. You’ll notice that their construction is very similar to the Pattern Pocket – but in another direction! The Odds and Ends pocket is worked like a ‘planned’ pocket, and the Notions pocket that will go above it is knit later as an afterthought pocket.
Next RS row: Knit across the first 19 sts of the row, place the remaining 18 sts on the first holder or scrap yarn, and turn the work. The 19 sts on the needles will be worked first, and the remaining sts on hold will be worked as a second portion to create a slit for the pocket opening.
Row 1 (WS): K3, P16.
Row 2: Knit.
Repeat these two rows 9 times total, then work row 1 once more: the flap is 20 rows long.
Place these 19 sts on a second holder or scrap yarn. Do not break yarn but set it aside.

Place the 18 sts from the first stitch holder or scrap yarn on your left needle. With a different ball of yarn, CO 2 sts onto the right-hand needle, then knit across the 18 sts on the left needle to join. There are now 20 sts. Work until the second portion is 20 rows long, ending after a wrong side row. Break yarn.

Place the 19 sts from the second stitch holder or scrap yarn back on the needles and resume using the attached ball of yarn. Knit across the first 17 sts. Work the next two stitches together with the first two stitches of the second portion – just the same way as you attached the Pattern Pocket flap to the body. Knit across the next 18 sts as usual. 37 sts.
Continue in St st for 10¼” (about 55 rows), ending after a WS row.

Switching which strand is held to the left or right of the other can create starkly different results; this concept is known as “color dominance.” The dominant color should be the one creating the design rather than the one creating the background, so that would be Winter Night in this pattern. The dominant color should always be held to the left of or below the nondominant, depending on how the yarn is held, and this should be kept consistent throughout the whole project, for an even appearance.

Throughout tacking instructions, MC/CC changed to bottom/top yarns for better clarity.

Pockets (Make 2)

The pockets are knitted separately and sewed on. 

Cast on 15 sts. Work back and forth in St st for 15 rows, then knit in Garter st for 5 rows. Bind off all sts.

Finishing

For each pocket, position the inside edge an inch from Garter st front flap and cast-on edge about an inch up from the sweater hem. Using mattress stitch, with RS facing out, sew cast on edge of pocket to cardigan. Using whipstitch, sew inside and outside edges, leaving top edge open. Repeat for other pocket.

In the Body section, for the buttonhole flaps, if you already know whether it's a little girl or boy, only work the buttonholes on the appropriate side, keeping the opposite band in Garter st. 

After the Buttonhole Row instruction, the next few sentences should read: Work a Buttonhole Row on the next row, then every 12th (14th, 14th, 16th, 17th, 19th) row two more times. Place a locking stitch marker through any stitch of the last buttonhole row to help you determine when to begin the armholes.

On page 11, in the Gusset Heel option of the Toe-Up Socks pattern, the Increase round instructions have been changed to add "Work across instep sts in pattern. On heel side: K1, M1L, K to last st, M1R, K1." In the Begin Short Rows instructions, in the last sentence, work two fewer sts past marker until there are 8 sts between increases, not 10. There will be a total of 63 sts across the heel at that point.
