AwareKnits urges you to be conscious of each stitch you knit. This book explains how you can make your knitting green by choosing to knit with sustainable yarns and knit classic and useful projects that will keep you warm and wear for years. Vickie Howell and Adrienne Armstrong use sustainable yarns for the projects in their book. They define sustainable yarns as either coming from a crop that is easy to regenerate, animals that were raised humanely and organically, recycled yarns, or yarns that support the livelihood of independent people or communities.
The projects in the book are divided into two categories, knits for the body and knits for the home. I particularly like the Polar Cap top down raglan cardigan with cap sleeves and lace details on the torso. Greensleeves is a fantastic men’s sweater pattern with a ribbed collar, zipper up the front, exposed seams, and asymmetric pieces where the stockinette knitting changes direction. In the home section, I like the Alter-Eco reuseable lunch pail which is crocheted out “plarn”—yarn made from recycled plastic bags. Global Warmth is a beautiful thick afghan with panels of ribbing and mock cables, which will certainly help to reduce the heating bill!
