There is really just one base hat presented in the book (the "second" is adding earflaps). The hats are seamed up the back in all cases. I found it difficult to make that look decent. All the animal bits, except for intarsia face colors, are stitched on separately. This includes puffy cheeks and cow spots. Unfortunately I was too new to knitting when I got this book to realize the actual lack of variety in hat itself. Just trying to learn enough to make one of these hats, I gained the skills to quickly surpass the hats presented here. It is a nice idea book, but I now find the execution of the animal parts extremely basic. (I've only been knitting for 4 months) Any animal hats I make from now on will be improvements on these ideas. This book is good if you know how to make a great base hat and are just looking for ideas for how to dress it up animal style.
