Drop Spindle

An interchangeable Turkish spindle! This drop spindle can be used as a high or low whorl spindle, so it is perfect for new spinners who want to try out different spinning methods. To start spinning, attach your yarn or leader to the top of the spindle with a half hitch loop. As you wind your yarn around the arms of your Turkish spindle, you create a center pull ball! In order to ply your yarn, just take both ends of your center pull ball, and spin them in the opposite direction.

This spindle weighs 35 grams, which is a versatile medium weight spindle that can be used for both spinning singles and plying your yarn. Item No. 80700

I have reviewed this once before, so this is really a hint for others who might purchase this item. It comes unfinished, so I rounded the edges with sandpaper and applied 5 coats of paste wax, buffing after each coat. It brought out the grain and gave it a velvety gloss. So not only is it the sweetest little spindle I have ever used (and I've used many), but it is beautiful as well and well worth a little effort considering the price of most Turkish spindles. Love it.

Love, love, love this spindle. I did shorten it by 1 1/2 inches, however, because I like a short spindle. Love the way it becomes a center-pull ball. Am spinning silk this is perfect as my wheel will not spin slow enough. Highly recommend it. I did put a bit of scotch tape on the shaft to tighten the whorl so it doesn't spin on itself.

I love it but I had to sand all the edges as it was rough and some splinters were coming off

Pros: It's the only top-whorl Turkish-style spindle out there that I'm aware of! The very thin spindle is actually more suited to that style of spinning, as it's very small in diameter, which gives good momentum if you're rolling it along your thigh. Winding on over the arms in the standard Turkish "under one over two" gives you a center pull ball when you're done! Cons: It comes unfinished and you may need to put a little yarn around the spindle underneath the arms to prevent them from slipping around until you get a good amount of spun yarn wound on.

They really should stop selling this. It's not a very good spindle and if it's the first one you try it discourages you when it's the spindle that is sub-par. I found that adding some invisible table to the shaft at the junction where it would be joined with the arms helps to secure it without the wobble and helps it spin better but, frankly you shouldn't have to do that.
