Negative Space Mittens Pattern
by Robin Melanson
Directions for this project in Knitting New Mittens and Gloves, shown below. The interesting construction of the fingerless mitten is rooted in the shape of a Norwegian-style mitten called a brudevott or kirkevott, worn at weddings or to church. They are alternatively known as half-gloves with a tongue. Having the palm side open and the back of the hand covered has its advantages: the hand is partially shielded from the elements, yet you can still use your fingers to dig into pockets for keys, take a photo, or even knit outside in the cold. Stitches are provisionally cast on, the mitten is worked to the tip, then the provisional cast-on is undone and an I-cord bind-off is worked which continues into an I-cord coil forming the cuff. The cutaway section of the mitten is also edged in I-cord, giving it substantial shape. Shown in Wool of the Andes Bulky Beetle.- Needles:
